The middle or "Mid-Layer" in the multi-layer clothing system, is a critical component to keeping warm in cold weather.  With a quality "Base" Layer in place, if the next layer is absorent like cotton or non-breathable in construction, this simply prevents the system working efficiently and will render you cold, wet & heavy.
